Site details
Site description: Large and natural raised bog complex comprising Teicu bog, the largest peatland in Latvia, as well as the Lielais Pelecares and Eiduku bogs. The area is rich in open bog habitats with numerous small lakes and pools. It is lined with mostly wet mixed and coniferous forests, and surrounded mostly by farmland. Listed as an IBA since 1989 [5, 6, 7, 1]. High protection level: there is a 97.1% overlap with Teici nature reserve and Lielais Pelecares bog restricted nature reserves, both candidate SPAs, as well as by Eiduku bog restricted nature area.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
