Site details

Site description: The IBA comprises stony islets and an area of saltmarsh between Frederikshavn and Strandby. Only the main island of Hirsholm is inhabited. Marine areas surrounding this IBA (and previously included within it, following Grimmett and Jones 1989) are now included in site 119.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: This is an important area for breeding gulls and terns including Sterna sandvicensis, S. hirundo and S. paradisaea, listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive.
