Site details
Site description: Steep loess bluffs up to 50 m in height, bordering the Danube between Banovci and Slankamen. Individual trees and abundant herbaceous vegetation survive along the upper edges of the bluffs; low-lying areas are undermined by the main river current at times of high flow. Human activities include extracting loess for use as building material.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: Wintering species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Branta ruficollis and Haliaeetus albicilla.
Delineation rationale: 2014-10-14 (BL Secretariat): following Puzović (2009), site area changed from 2500 ha to 5304 ha; coordinates changed from 45.083N 20.367E to 45°3'52'N 20°21'25'E.
