Site details

Site description: The most significant landscape feature of the IBA is the almost pristine 33 km long course of the Tamiš river with its vast flood areas and salt marshes, situated between municipalities of Zrenjanin and Kovačica. Significant parts of this unique ecosystem are vast fishponds in Baranda (1.005 ha), as well as Uzdin (430 ha) and Čenta (120 ha). Preserved riparian forests still exist in large patches along the Tamiš river, but are also vast areas with cultivated poplars.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Delineation rationale: 2014-10-14 (BL Secretariat): following Puzović (2009), site area changed from 5500 ha to 14507 ha; coordinates changed from 45.217N 20.633E to 45°9'24'N 20°27'43'E.
