Site details

Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Delineation rationale: The site boundary is based upon a seaward extension of 71 km around Gaferut Island to encompass the foraging range of IBA threshold numbers of Brown Booby based upon a 2002 population estimate of 3,000 individuals from Wiles, G.J., Johnson, N.C.. de Cruz, J.B., Dutson, G., Camacho, V.A., Kepler, A.K., Vice, D.S., Garrett, K.L., Kessler, C.C. and Pratt, H.D. (2004): New and Noteworthy Bird Records for Micronesia, 1986–2003. Micronesica 37(1): 69-96.
