Site details
Site description: This is a coastline with steep cliffs and several rocky pillars, plunging 200 m into the sea from a montane plateau. About 250 ha of the IBA area is sea, the rest is land. Four salmon fisheries (aquaculture) are situated in the area.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: Together with Hjelmsøya, these cliffs support the largest, most varied and most important seabird colonies in Finnmark. This is the largest colony in Norway of Uria aalge (formerly 12,000 pairs in 1985 but had declined to 2,500 pairs by 1997). Good numbers of seaduck occur offshore in winter.
Delineation rationale: Site area reduced from 11,600 ha (2000 IBA) to 990 ha (2015 IBA), to match the seabird colony. Polygon partially adopted from an official polygon for a Protected Area. Created in Google Earth.
