Site details


Site description: An estuary of the Gaula river with a small island (Storøra) and extensive tidal mudflats and coastal shallows.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: The area holds a range of waders and wildfowl in good numbers. Species of global conservation concern which do not meet IBA criteria: Haliaeetus albicilla (2 pairs).
Delineation rationale: Around half of the area is adopted from an official polygon for a Protected Area.
