Site details


Site description: This site occurs in the Edough Peninsula in northern Algeria. Habitats include open mesothermic forests (dominated by Quercus suber-Olea europea), thermo-xeric scrubland, cultivated fields, and ponds.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. The Edough Ribbed Newt (Pleurodeles poireti) triggers A1a/B1. Additionally, the North African Fire Salamander (Salamandra algira) meets legacy KBA criteria and is in need of reassessment against the Global Standard.
