Site description: An open, diverse landscape near Mattersburg. The main land-use is low-intensity agriculture and the site consists of arable fields, orchards, grassland and groves dominated by Castanea sativa.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: This site holds important numbers of birds associated with non-intensively managed orchards and open woodland.

Threats
Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: Threats include the abandonment of orchards, Castanea groves and hay-meadows, and the removal of old trees, nesting sites for Otus scops. Castanea stands are also threatened by a virus (`Other' threats). A two-year conservation project (1994-1995) has been completed, resulting in detailed management proposals.
