Site details
Site description: The Lobau is the western part of a large area of riverine forest associated with the Danube. It is divided by the Donau-Oder-Kanal into the Obere (Upper) and Untere (Lower) Lobau. The Obere Lobau is a mixture of agriculture and intensive forestry, but the Untere Lobau contains areas of near-natural forest. Both areas are used for recreational activities, angling and hunting.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: The site is important for breeding riverine forest species.
