Site details
Site description: The site is a military training area and is closed to the general public. About 70 km2of land were removed from agricultural production in 1941 and this area is now fallow land. The remainder of the area is composed of intensively managed spruce Picea forest, arable land, hay-meadows, and a few fish-ponds. Apart from military training, human activities include hunting, fisheries, agriculture and forestry.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: This site is important for species of open and semi-open landscapes. It holds the largest population of Crex crex in Austria.
