Site details


Site description: Includes a riverine island (Pagensand) and the edges of the tidal River Elbe, along with riverine forest, pasture, reedbeds (Phragmites) and arable land. Human activities include intensive agriculture and wildfowl hunting.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: The site holds more than 20,000 passage waterbirds on a regular basis. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Crex crex (11 breeding pairs).
