Site details
Site description: A bay on the southern shore of the Baltic Sea, comprising large shoals, intertidal zones and saltmarsh. An ice-free zone around a nuclear power-station outfall has increased the bay's importance for wintering waterbirds. The hinterland is used for pasture and haymaking; traditional fishing takes place at sea.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: The site holds more than 20,000 passage waterbirds on a regular basis.
