Site details


Site description: A large bog in the lowland area of the Baruther Urstromtal with inland dunes, reedbeds (Phragmites), wet forest and a widespread system of ditches.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: One of the three sites in Germany for Otis tarda. The site regularly holds 20,000 or more waterbirds on passage. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Crex crex (5 breeding pairs) and Otis tarda (10-11 birds).
