Site details

Site description: National Park Kornati and Nature Park Telascica consist of many islands, islets, shallow sea and bays, but also of high cliffs suitable for breeding Shags, raptors and swifts. Allepo pine groves and maquis are best developed in Telascica, while Kornati are mostly covered by xeric grasslands. Main threats are unregulated recreational activities and tourism, overfishing and changes in traditional farming.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard. The site has not met global KBA criteria during the 2010 CEPF Mediterranean Ecosystem Profile process, but has been identified as a regional KBA. Taxonomy and nomenclature follow the 2008 IUCN Red List.
Delineation rationale: Area changed from 30200 ha to 28227 ha (Radovic, Kralj, Tutis, Radovic & Topic, 2005). Area changed from 28227 ha to 28568 ha, as part of 2010 revision of IBAs/proposed SPAs.
