Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Delineation rationale: 2017-07-25 (BL Secretariat): The 2004 IBAs Avacha bay (Khlamovitskiy Wildlife Reserve) (SitRecID 16471) and Starichkov island (16470), as well as the latter's 2012 marine extension (SitRecID 30620), have all been merged to form Avachinskaya Bay and Starichkov Island (45736), following Artukhin (2016).
