Site details

Site description: The site includes the largest natural lake on the Romanian plain, associated with the Neajlov river. Approximately 75% of its surface is covered by reedbeds (Phragmites). The shallow waters increase in depth during periods of flood; intense silting is taking place. An area of forest lies to the south of the lake.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: This is an important site for breeding and passage waterbirds. 212 species have been recorded from the lake and forest. Passage species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Phalacrocorax pygmeus, Pelecanus crispus and Gallinago media.
