The KBA Río Abiseo National Park Buffer Zone harbors three range restricted lizard species, three threatened frog species (Rhinella vellardi and Atelopus patazensis, Gastrotheca phelloderma), the rodent species Thomasomys eleusis, five range restricted bird species and the vulnerable plant species Brachyotum angustifolium.
Additional biodiversity: Phyllotis andium, Artibeus fraterculus, Eremoryzomys polius, Thomasomys eleusis, Akodon mollis, Akodon orophilus, Anoura peruana, Desmodus rotundus, Eremoryzomys polius, Tremarctos ornatus, Matucana oreodoxa, Ara militaris, Aulacorhynchus huallagae, Cnemathraupis aureodorsalis, Forpus xanthops, Grallaria przewalskii, Spizaetus isidori, Zaratornis stressemanni, Vultur gryphus, Anairetes nigrocristatus, Atlapetes tricolor, Grallaria carrikeri, Incaspiza laeta, Leptossittaca branickii, Metallura theresiae, Opisthoprora euryptera, Scytalopus macropus, Geocerthia serrana, Ramphocelus melanogaster, Laccopetalum giganteum
Manageability of the site: Being part of a National Park Buffer Zone, the KBA Río Abiseo National Park Buffer Zone can be managed by the National Service for Natural Areas Protected by the State - SERNANP and the Regional Governments of La Libertad and San Martín. This KBA include concessions for the conservation of Amazonia by the Amazonia-NGO, Huicungo Agricultural Association, Ronda Gran Pajaten Peasant, Solopache Conservation Forest Association and Nikolov Pioneros, these organizations have been implementing conservation initiatives to maintain the ecological characteristics of the trigger species within the limits of the KBA.
Other site values: Communities like Piás, Dos de Mayo, Pachiza, Huicungo, Peasant Community of Los Andes.
Delineation rationale: The KBA is delineated based on the cartographic characteristics that belong to the Buffer Zone of the Abiseo River National Park to the west, including to the north the concessions for the conservation of Amazonia by the Amazonia-NGO, Huicungo Agricultural Association, Ronda Gran Pajaten Peasant, Solopache Conservation Forest Association and Nikolov Pioneros. Trigger birds could be found in the patches of forest between the cultivated fields, deforested and urban areas and may move between these patches, so we consider that the species continues to use the area.
