Site details
Site description: Soche Mountain forest reserve is a significant natural area located in the southern part of Malawi near the city of Blantyre. It was established in 1922 and covers 388 hectares with a length of 8.67 kilometers. It is an important ecological site known for its rich biodiversity and unique ecosystems. The reserve covers two habitats Deciduous Forest and Thicket and Drier Miombo Woodland which supports a wide range of flora and fauna. The area also plays an essential role in regulating local climate, water resources and soil conservation. Additionally, it serves as a recreational, worshiper’s place and with hiking trails offering scenic views. It is a critical environmental asset, contributing to biodiversity conservation and local climate stability.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: Soche Mountain Forest Reserve qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because of its different varieties of endemic and threatened species, it also has high biodiversity value and contributes to watershed protection. These factors support distinctive species, habitats, and ecosystems of ecological value. Only Buxus nyasica triggers the KBA as A1a, B1 criteria.
Additional biodiversity: Soche Mountain Forest Reserves hosts several other species that are either residential or migrate to the site during a certain time. These includes; Buxus nyasica, Brachystegia species, Albizia lebbeck, Khaya anthotheca. Apalis chariessa, Geokichla guttata and Chamaetylas choloensis are extinct now. The site has two ecosystem types, Deciduous Forest and Thicket and Drier Miombo woodland.
Manageability of the site: The forest reserved is under Department of Forestry but mainly managed by Blantyre Department of Forestry through VNRMCs (Chitsa, Tikondane, Kwale 1, Kwale 2 and Chilobwe Clubs) and Water Committees who help in conservation and proposed trust (Soche Mountain Conservation trust).
Delineation rationale: The boundary follows the existing National Protected Areas Layer.
Name of Protected Area: Soche Mountain Forest Reserve.
Data Source: Malawi Spatial Data Platform (MASDAP)
The Spatial Data was developed by Malawi Government under the department of Physical Planning under the Ministry of Lands.
Habitats
Summary of habitats in KBA: The site comprises of miombo woodland, evergreen forest, grassland, and degraded habitats.
