Site details


Site description: A shallow, spring-fed saline lake separated from Lake Van (site 096) by an alluvial ridge. There is no outlet and up to 50% of the lake dries out during summer. Some marshland is present at the fringes where freshwater occurs. Low hills and non-irrigated arable land surround the lake. Limited stock-grazing occurs along the shoreline.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: The area is important for breeding waterbirds.
