Site details
Site description: The site comprises two shallow freshwater lakes, Lake Bibishervan (37°09'N 54°52'E, 300 ha) and Lake Eymar (37°08'N 54°52'E, 250 ha), with fringing Phragmites and Carex on the southern edge of the Turkoman Steppes 30 km west-south-west of Gonbad-e Qaboos. The surrounding area is cultivated.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: See box for key species. A wintering area for a wide variety of waterfowl including good numbers of Netta rufina (up to 740) and Vanellus vanellus. Breeding birds include Glareola pratincola and Chlidonias hybridus, and up to ten Aquila clanga have occurred on passage. Non-bird biodiversity: None known to BirdLife International.
