Site details
Site description: Cheghakhor (Chogakhor) Marsh lies in the upper drainage of the Karun river on a broad grassy plain at c.2,100 m in the central Zagros Mountains, c.95 km west of Shahreza. It is a permanent freshwater marsh which floods in winter and spring, but by late summer much of it is dry and the remainder is almost entirely overgrown with emergent vegetation. The vegetation is Phragmites and Typha beds surrounded by sedge. Large portions of the adjacent grassy plains are cultivated with wheat. Land ownership is public.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: See box for key species. An important wintering area for Casmerodius albus, Anas platyrhynchos (up to 6,700) and Aythya nyroca. Marmaronetta angustirostris has been recorded recently. Non-bird biodiversity: None known to BirdLife International.
