Site details
Site description: This site forms the southernmost tip of the island of öland and consists of deciduous woodland with Betula, Quercus, and Populus tremula, open grazing-land, scrub, sand/pebble beaches, sandbanks and small bays. There are also extensive shallows and seaweed-covered beaches. The dominant human activity is cattle-raising.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: The IBA supports a rich breeding bird fauna, and attracts large numbers of migrating waterbirds, cranes, raptors and passerines.

Threats
Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: No serious threats are known at the site. Ottenby Bird Observatory manages the Nature Reserve with the help of EU funding˜wet meadows are managed for waders. The observatory (owned by SOF) also monitors breeding birds (e.g. Crex crex) and carries out research into bird migration. Some 200,000 people visit every year; a new visitor's centre opened in 1997.
