Site details
Site description: A shallow calcareous lake that has undergone extensive restoration work over the last five years, involving water-level management. The lake's surroundings are mainly cultivated or cattle-grazed, although there are some forested areas. More than 100,000 people visit the lake each year.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: The IBA is important for breeding wetland birds, and is a migratory bottleneck site, where up to 10,000 Grus grus regularly pass in spring. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Haliaeetus albicilla (3-5 passage birds), Crex crex (1-2 breeding pairs), Gallinago media (5-20 passage birds).
Delineation rationale: Old area: 6350ha Changed due to more accurate information on borders and size. /Robert Ekblom (2007-10-23)
