Site details


Site description: Located in the eastern part of Houtao Plain. Ulansuhai is the second largest lake in Inner Mongolia, extending 35-40 km from north to south and 5-10 km from east to west, with more than 290 km2 of open water. Emergent reeds and bulrushes cover 50% of the lake area, and these water plants separate the lake surface into several different sections. Ulansuhai supports one of the most important fisheries in Inner Mongolia.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
