Site details
Site description: Located at the north-western tip of Tibet. Bangong Co is an elongated lake of 60,400 ha. The islets in the lake, the largest of which is 100 ha, are important breeding areas for birds.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: Non-bird biodiversity: The area supports Ursus arctos, Panthra uncia, Equus kiang and Pantholops hodgsoni.
