Site details
Site description: Located in the south-western part of Jiuzhaigou County. Jiuzhaigou is a mountain valley that extends for more than 40 km, with nine Tibetan villages in the vicinity. The river valley and the slopes are fully covered by dense forest, and there are 118 lakes along the valley. The vegetation shows prominent vertical zonation, with temperate coniferous forest (2,000-2,500 m), coniferous-broadleaf mixed forest (2,500-2,800 m), coniferous forest (2,800-3,500 m) and alpine scrub and grassland (above 3,500 m).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected animals include Ailurpoda melanolenca, Pygathrix roxellanae, Pseudois nayaur, Panthera pardus, Ailurus fulgens, Moschus berezovskii and Naemorhedus goral.
Delineation rationale: Polygon provided by Wendall – source unknown. Small changes made by Tris Allinson (Birdlife International). Accuracy difficult to determine.
