Site details


Site description: This KBA comprises Amazon lowlands primary evergreen forests of the Tigre and Pastaza rivers. Additionally, flooded forests on the alluvial plain influenced by the eastern Andean and amazonian ridges mountains rivers. It includes flooded forests and flooded palm forests of the amazon floodplain. The altitudinal range of this KBA goes between 300 and 350 m. This can be one of the best preserved amazonian landscapes in Ecuador in the mid of Pastaza province on the lower sub-basin of the Bobonaza River until its mouth in the Pastaza River. This KBA fits inside of what is known as the territory of the Andwa, Shiwiar and Achuar amazonian ancestral nationalities of Ecuador.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least two criteria described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. Under A1d criterion, threatened of extinction species like: Cebuella pygmaea and under B1 criterion, the amazonian fish, Bujurquina pardus.
Additional biodiversity: Panthera onca, Harpia harpyja, Pteronura brasiliensis, Inia geoffrensis, Sotalia fluviatilis, Trichechus inunguis
Manageability of the site: Protected and defended by three ancestral amazonian nationalities: Andwa, Shiwiar and Achuar with the support of the CONFENIAE (Confederation on amazonian indigenous nationalities of Ecuador).
Supersedes another site: Territorio Achuar (14571). Río Conambo-Bobonaza (14565).

Delineation rationale: Natural limits: Bobonaza river lower part goes through the KBA. To the north the KBA limits with Corrientes river from the Tigre river sub-basin. To the south-west the Chundayacu river is the limit. This KBA covers the conserved forest of the current territory of these nationalities. To the east the rest of the territories of Shiwiar and Achuar amazonian nationalities.
