Site description: The KBA Cordillera Huayhuash y Nor Oyón covers an area of 784.20 sq km and it's located in Perú, departments of Lima, Huánuco and Áncash, and the provinces of Cajatambo and Oyón (Lima), Lauricocha (Huánuco) and Bolognesi (Áncash).The altitudinal range of this KBA is 3650 to 6600 masl. The main climate types of the KBA Cordillera Huayhuash y Nor Oyón are: 1) Rainy with abundant humidity all year round, semi-hardy, with a maximum temperature between -7°C to 15°C. Annual precipitation ranges between 700 mm and 900 mm approximately; 2) Rainy with dry autumn and winter, cold, with a maximum temperature between -3°C to 19°C. Annual rainfall ranges between 500 mm and 1200 mm approximately 3) Very rainy with abundant humidity all seasons of the year, semi-rigid, with a maximum temperature between 1°C to 15°C. The annual precipitation ranges between 700 mm and 1200 mm approximately, and 4) Perennial ice, Glacier, with a maximum temperature between -7°C to 11°C. Annual precipitation ranges from 900 to 1500 mm approximately. The KBA Cordillera Huayhuash y Nor Oyón presents the following ecosystems: "Pajonal de puna húmeda", "Zona periglaciar", "Zona glaciar", "Lagos y lagunas", "Bosques relictos altoandinos (queñual and others)", "Matorral andino" and "Bofedales".
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: The KBA Cordillera Huayhuash y Nor Oyón qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for the A1a, A1b and A1d criteria described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBA. This KBA harbors the range restricted bird species Anairetes alpinus and the Vulnerable plant Polylepis weberbaueri.

Manageability of the site: This KBA contains part of three Private Conservation Areas: Huayllapa, Pacllón and Jirishanca. All of them are managed by private owners, who have the support of the National Service for Natural Areas Protected by the State - SERNANP.
Other site values: The site overlaps with the Quichas, Huayllapa, Queropalca, and Llamac communities; indigenous and local communities should be involved in any steps to advance management of this site.
Delineation rationale: This KBA follows the limits of the Zona Reservada Cordillera Huayhuash and to the southwest it borders the Pumarinri River, crossing the Huayllapa River and the Segua Quebrada.
