Site details

Site description: A shallow sea area with shoals, banks and islands surrounded by saltmarsh and agricultural land.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: Population data are incomplete but numbers of wintering birds appear to be lower than in 1983 when the site was designated as a Special Protection Area. It is possible that very high numbers only occur in harsh winters, when several more species meet the A4i criterion, and the total number of waterbirds exceeds 20,000 individuals. Sterna hirundo and Sterna paradisaea, listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive, breed at the site.
