Site details

Site description: A shallow, almost enclosed fjord area (connected to the open sea by sluices), surrounded by saltmarshes, meadows and agricultural land.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: The site is an important staging ground for Mergus merganser in cold winters, when regular staging grounds elsewhere are covered in ice. Circus aeruginosus, Recurvirostra avosetta and Sterna hirundo, listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive, breed at the site.
