Monitoring

For long-term conservation

KBA monitoring aims to capture a snapshot of the status of KBAs.

Monitoring the status of qualifying species and ecosystems within Key Biodiversity Areas, along with the pressures they face and the conservation measures in place or needed, is crucial for tracking changes in these sites as vital places for biodiversity persistence. This process not only helps identify conservation needs but also evaluates the effectiveness of management strategies and legal protections in place.

We've developed a standardised monitoring protocol to ensure that assessments are consistent and comparable across different sites. This protocol helps streamline the monitoring process, making it easier for various stakeholders to contribute valuable data.

Help us monitor KBAs

If you visit a site and know the species or ecosystems that make it a KBA, you can help. We encourage individuals, and organisations who are familiar with their KBAs to participate in the KBA monitoring process by joining together with others in compiling the details required, such as information on the status of the biodiversity elements of importance, or the impacts of the threats on these species or ecosystems. Visit our KBA Monitoring Strategy for more details.
