A global inventory of the most vital sites for biodiversity conservation
The World Database of Key Biodiversity Areas (WDKBA) is a global, continually updated resource that documents and maps the most vital sites for biodiversity conservation across terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems.
- The WDKBA serves as a centralised system for supporting the proposal process and for managing the data submitted during assessments and reassessments, providing an online platform where anyone can participate in assessing and reassessing these vital areas.
- It supports individual proposers and NCGs step by step in providing information on new KBAs, updating existing KBAs, and in providing all relevant and necessary documentation why each site is important for biodiversity.
- It includes many validation checks along the way ensuring that the information supplied is correct and consistent with the KBA Standard.
- And it supports the review processes required by the Regional Focal Points and the KBA Secretariat to verify the information provided. KBA data are published regularly on the KBA website and through IBAT, supporting a broad range of uses including multilateral environment agreements and business.
